Expect the unexpected when the David Mayfield Parade takes the stage at the free Summer Breeze concert on Sunday, August 26, at 7:30 pm in Norman’s Lions Park at the corner of Flood and Symmes.
David Mayfield has been performing music in front of people almost his entire life. Growing up in Kent, Ohio, he was surrounded by bluegrass music. By the time he was a teenager, he had won several national awards for his guitar and mandolin playing. A few years later after a stint of “gun-for-hire” gigs in Nashville, Mayfield joined Andy Griggs’ band, making several appearances on the coveted Grand Ole Opry stage. He also toured with Jessica Lea Mayfield as her bassist, appeared with the Avett Brothers, and was lead guitarist and contributing songwriter for folk rock favorites Cadillac Sky. But his side man role has been just one of the many musical paths this Grammy-nominated artist has journeyed, all while writing and performing his own songs.
In 2010 he stepped into the spotlight to front his own band, The David Mayfield Parade. The band’s music and showmanship reflects the numerous influences that come from a lifetime of being immersed in American music and channeling its unique forms with sincerity and celebration, from the howl of early rock-n-roll to the low lonesome twang of folk and country. The David Mayfield Parade is all at once a rock band, a folk group, a bluegrass combo, and a comedy troupe. They’ll have you rolling on the grass laughing one moment, and in the next they’ll amaze you with their instrumental virtuosity and intelligent, beautiful, humorous songs.
Bring seating and your favorite refreshments, and enjoy a relaxing evening in the park filled with great music!
