The Oklahoma Composers Association, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting new music in Oklahoma, presents its third annual Future of Music Symposium this July. The free, day long event will take place on Saturday, July 7, 2012, 9:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Sonder Music, Dance & Art (225 E Gray St, Norman, OK). The annual symposium focuses attention on how technology, globalization and the economy are influencing the way music is created, distributed, valued and experienced. Kerry Folsom, a doctoral candidate in music composition at the University of Oklahoma, spearheaded the idea for the symposium in 2010. “The purpose of the event is to create an open discussion for composers and musicians about the future,” Kerry says. “A lot is changing in the world of music and we want to bring that into focus.”

This year’s symposium includes a welcome reception, three presentations, a round table discussion, and a concert. Dr. Konstantinos Karathanasis, a faculty member in Composition at the University of Oklahoma, will present about the future of electroacoustic music. Sabrina Peña Young, a self-described “Intermedia composer, percussionist, and obsessive sci-fi buff,” will discuss how technology is affecting modern composition. Folsom is also presenting this year for the first time. He plans to focus on Native American music tradition in the new millennium. All three presenters will have works performed on the concert, which begins at 5:30 p.m.

The complete symposium schedule can be found online at www.oklahomacomposers.org.

The 2011-2012 Sunday Jazz Concert series concludes on May 13 with a solo guitar performance by local guitar hero, Travis Linville. The concert takes place at the Historic Santa Fe Depot, located at 200 South Jones in Norman. The show begins at 7:30 pm. An admission fee of $7 will be charged; $5 for seniors/students and free for 18 and under. Refreshments will be provided.

Most folks know Linville through his tuneful singer/songwriter mode or as a guitar soloist sitting in with local and regional bands passing through Oklahoma. However, this show promises to highlight his considerable jazz chops. Two years ago he opened the 2010-2011 concert series with a jazz trio but this year he’s going solo.

“Classic Jazz has a lot to do with who I am musically,” said Linville. “I’m thrilled about the opportunity to stretch out on some tunes in a great setting. This will be something different for fans who come out regularly to hear me do songwriter material.”

Years of paying dues as an underage guitar slinger paid off when Linville formed the Burtschi Brothers in 2000. The hop, alt country, jazz/jam quartet quickly became an Oklahoma favorite and put Travis on the map among Oklahoma’s finest guitar players.
When he’s not performing, Travis is producing records at his DirtyBird recording studio in Norman, OK, or sharing his knowledge and experience with students at ACM@UCO and McMichael Music.

Sunday Jazz at the Depot concerts are made possible in part by grants from the Norman Arts Council, Oklahoma Arts Council and National Endowment for the Arts. Additional funding comes from generous individual and business sponsors, including Mark Williams and the Northeast Blanco Development Corporation, Nancy McClellan, Fred Overstreet, Fred Schneider, and Deborah Norris.

The Performing Arts Studio Gallery and office in the Norman Depot are open from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Phone 405-307-9320 for additional information about PAS programs.

University of Oklahoma School of Dance graduate assistant and Ballets Russes archivist Tara Davis, has been awarded a Dance Heritage Coalition (DHC) Fellowship for the summer of 2012. The DHC is a national alliance of organizations, libraries and archives that hold significant collections of materials documenting the history of dance.

One of seven awardees from over eighty applicants, Davis will spend the summer at the Lawrence and Lee Theater Research Institute at Ohio State University, where she will be working with many different performing arts collections. Before going to Ohio, she will attend a week-long orientation in Washington, D.C. to prepare for the summer internship.

Davis has a BA in English and is currently pursuing her master’s degree in the School of Library and Information Studies at the University of Oklahoma. As an Oklahoma native and a member of the Seneca-Cayuga Tribe, Davis has a great interest in performing arts and tribal archives.

When she returns to the Ballets Russes Archive in the fall of 2012, Davis will share her expertise, acquired from the internship, in processing and preparing the archive collections at OU for public access.

The Dance Heritage Coalition has a generous grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services to support these Fellowships in Preservation and Archives for master’s degree students from across the country.

The University of Oklahoma’s program in dance was founded in 1963 by Yvonne Chouteau and Miguel Terekhov, former principal dancers with Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. What had been a department became the School of Dance in 1998 with Mary Margaret Holt as Director. Undergraduate and graduate dance majors, along with general education students, total approximately 1000 enrollees in dance classes per semester. The School of Dance’s state-of-the-art facility in the Donald W. Reynolds Performing Art Center was completed in 2005.

The University of Oklahoma School of Dance (SOD) will host a memorial celebration on May 6 at 3:00 p.m. in Historic Holmberg Hall, part of the Reynolds Performing Arts Center on the OU campus, to honor Miguel Terekhov who, with his wife Yvonne Chouteu, founded the initial program in dance here in 1963. Following decades of service to dance and to the university, Terekhov passed away on January 3. He was eighty-three.

As principal dancers with Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, and Terekhov with Col. Wassily de Basil’s Original Ballet Russe earlier, he and Chouteau arrived in Oklahoma City in 1961 with two baby daughters in tow to visit her parents. C.E. Chouteau – Yvonne’s father – convinced OU President George Lynn Cross that ballet classes would be an excellent addition to current courses in physical education. From such a modest beginning, Terekhov built the university’s program, which was established in 1963 as one of the first fully accredited curricula in dance in the U. S.

The memorial event will attempt to honor the many aspects of Terekhov’s life as a performer, choreographer and dedicated teacher. A still photo montage will present details from his early career with Original Ballet Russe and Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. Video clips will show him rehearsing pas de deux with Chouteau. Live excerpts from some of his ballets such as Firebird, Verdi Divertimento and the “Osage Variation” from The Four Moons will be danced. A section from Mary Margaret Holt’s Balletudes will demonstrate the admirable technical strength of the program he and Chouteau built. Contemporary Dance Oklahoma will show work addressing Terekhov’s reinforcement of modern dance with his invitation to Ko Yukihiro to found roots of the current curriculum. Speakers will include Mary Margaret Holt, Director of the School of Dance since 1998, and Marcelo Angelini, Artistic Director of Tulsa Ballet. A reception will follow in the School of Dance Gallery, Room 3040 in the Donald W. Reynolds Performing Arts Center.

Tickets are $20 and may be purchased through the Fine Arts Box Office in the Catlett Music Center at 500 West Boyd Street or by telephoning 405-325-4101. All proceeds from the performance benefit the Chouteau-Terekhov Scholarship Fund established by the Terekhov family. Those who are unable to attend, but wish to make a contribution either to the Chouteau-Terekhov Scholarship Fund or to the SOD Ballets Russes Archive, may send checks made payable to OU Foundation and mailed to School of Dance, 560 Parrington Oval, Norman, OK 73019.

“What Terekhov accomplished was true artistic pioneering,” observed Holt. “His dedication to classicism – especially the highest standards of training in ballet – and his sheer love of dance enabled him to carve out and nourish a niche for this art form on campus. He created and fed a curriculum that made it possible for a dancer to begin the first stages toward professionalism. His were the first fine arts classes to require meetings five days each week.” Like some other classical artists of his generation, Terekhov was in the vanguard of those who planted seeds from the Diaghilev tradition in the Americas.

Terekhov is survived by his wife Yvonne Chouteau; daughter Christie Conway, her husband Kevin and their sons Sean and Ryan; as well as daughter Elizabeth Impallomeni.

“Guests will be able to see and hear up-close a portion of the Möller Municipal Pipe Organ, Opus 5819 which is being restored piece-by-piece here in the shop. It’s a landmark instrument and a national treasure,” says John Schwandt, director of the American Organ Institute at the OU School of Music.

The University of Oklahoma School of Music presents the fourth annual Open House from 3-5 p.m., Sunday, May 6 at the American Organ Institute shop. Guests will have a chance to see the work of the organ program in restoration of pipe organs and components, meet the students, and enjoy light refreshments.

The tour will exhibit many different organ components from Opus 5819 in various stages of the restoration process. Schwandt says the open house will also showcase the rebuilding of one of the school’s practice organs, which is nearing completion.

The American Organ Institute restoration shop is located at 2101 W. Tecumseh Road, Suite C, just outside of the OU Arts District! This event is free and open to the public; light refreshments will be provided.

“The annual Senior Capstone Exhibition is the final show of the academic year and features the very fine work of our graduating seniors,” says Dr. Mary Jo Watson, Director of the School of Art & Art History at the University of Oklahoma. “We hope the community will have an opportunity to join us at the opening or come by to see the work while it is installed here at the School of Art & Art History. We are very proud of these outstanding students.”

The University of Oklahoma School of Art & Art History will host it’s 2012 Senior Capstone Exhibition from April 29 through May 12. A free, public reception will be held from 2-4 p.m., on Sunday, April 29.

The Capstone Exhibition features the work of graduating Seniors from all visual art programs offered at the School of Art & Art History. Work from students studying Studio Art (printmaking, painting, sculpture, and ceramics) and Media Art (photography, film and video) will be on display in the Lightwell Gallery on the second floor of the School of Art & Art History (Fred Jones Art Center – FJC.) Visual Communication students will exhibit their work on the first floor in room 111.

This exhibit is presented in conjunction with a Capstone class required for all graduating seniors receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Oklahoma. The pieces displayed in this exhibition will be chosen from a body of work these students have created to represent the culmination of their studies at the School of Art & Art History. The students also organize and install the exhibit themselves, which provides them with valuable, hands-on experience for exhibiting their work post-graduation.

The University of Oklahoma’s Lightwell Gallery is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and is located on the second floor of the School of Art & Art History in the Fred Jones Art Center, 520 Parrington Oval, in the OU Arts District.

Please visit art.ou.edu/ for a full calendar of exhibitions and lectures at the School of Art & Art History. The University of Oklahoma is an equal opportunity institution. For accommodations on the basis of disability, please call the School of Art & Art History office at (405) 325-2691.
