One of Oklahoma’s most popular bands will get concertgoers dancing in the park when it brings salsa and meringue music to Andrews Park Sunday, Aug. 1.

Son del Barrio (Sound of the Neighborhood) will perform in the park’s amphitheater at 7:30 p.m. The concert is presented as part of the Performing Arts Studio’s Summer Breeze concert series.

Since forming in 2002, Son del Barrio has introduced thousands of Oklahomans — Latinos and non-Latinos alike – to the salsa and merengue genres. The band’s rhythmic foundation is Armando Rivera, widely considered the best Latin percussionist in the state. Rounding out the group are Robert Ruiz on trumpet; Wilmari Ruiz on flute; and Osmay Gutierrez Danger, trumpet and lead vocals.

A genre that incorporates multiple styles and variations, salsa was brought to international fame by Cuban and Puerto Rican musicians who immigrated to the New York City area in the 1960s and ’70s. Although essentially Cuban Caribbean in stylistic origin, salsa also incorporates pop, jazz, rock and R&B music.

Merengue originated in the Dominican Republic. Its name is taken from the Spanish name of the meringue, a dessert made from whipped egg whites and sugar, and may trace its meaning from the movement on the dance floor that could remind one of an egg beater in action.

“Son del Barrio continues to be one of the most popular Summer Breeze concerts,” said Mark Levy, Performing Arts Studio Board President. “It’s not unusual to see hundreds of people forming conga lines. Fans are always excited to see this show.”

Concertgoers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and picnic baskets to enjoy the free outdoor show.

The Summer Breeze Concert Series is supported by grants from the Norman Arts Council and Oklahoma Arts Council, as well as the generous support of many local businesses, organizations and individuals.

Upcoming shows in the Summer Breeze Concert Series:

Aug 15 – Chuck Allen Floyd – Lions Park

Aug 29 – Dylan Hammett – Lions Park

Sep 12 – Mama Sweet – Lions Park
(previously 07/11 at Andrews Park)

Sep 19 – Sierra Hull – Lions Park

Dustbowl Arts Market is stirring up some creativity in Oklahoma.

The art and handmade market is accepting artist applications for its third event on August 28th in Norman. Dustbowl will feature more than 50 local and regional artists and handmade vendors. Pottery, painting, photography, jewelry, prints, screen-printing, clothing, accessories and textiles will be among the items for sale at Dustbowl.

Dustbowl co-chair Katie Huskerson said the event focuses on local commerce, building community and promoting originality.

“We feel that Oklahoma and surrounding states have a multitude of creative people,” Huskerson said. “We’ve designed Dustbowl to encourage and provide a practical venue for artists to display and sell their work.”

Located on Campus Corner in Norman, Dustbowl will kick off the University of Oklahoma’s school year. Shopping will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and patrons can enjoy live music from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. The market will feature a Kid’s Corner designed to promote creativity at a young age.

This year, Dustbowl has teamed up with Blackwatch Studios to bring an amazing line-up of musicians – Evangelicals, Colourmusic, The NON, Native Lights, Jacob Abello, Pretty Black Chains, Samantha Crain, Sherree Chamberlain, Brine Webb, Unwed Sailor, and Brother Gruesome.

“August 28th is the first Saturday that campus life will be back in full swing,” Huskerson said. “We’re excited to offer another incentive for Norman and merto-area residents to visit Campus Corner and support the shop local movement.”

Artist applications are due on July 24th. Download applications and learn more at DustbowlArtsMarket.com.

The Performing Arts Studio welcomes the return of Big Smith to the Summer Breeze stage Sunday, July 18 at the Andrews Park Amphitheatre, 201 W. Daws St. The free concert is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m

Bring a picnic basket, perhaps a blanket to soften the concrete seating or lawn chairs for the grassy area on either side, and prepare to enjoy outstanding bluegrass music.

A band from the Ozarks, Big Smith is composed of five cousins: Mark and Jody Bilyeu, Bill and Rik Thomas, and Jay Williamson. The newest member, fiddle player Molly Healey, brings the total to six creative individuals bound together by blood and harmony.

“The purity of family harmonies is one of the first attractions new audiences find with Big Smith.” says Steven White, Summer Breeze Committee Chairman. “Add to it seasoned musicians who seem to really enjoy making bluegrass music together and it will make for a great Summer Breeze concert.”

After coming together professionally in the fall of 1996, Big Smith quickly earned a devoted following playing “raucous acoustic music” that captured the spirit of their native Ozarks. In 2007 music became a full-time profession for Big Smith.

They have made their mark outside the Ozarks with several forays to Chicago, Nashville, Austin and Colorado; several tours to the West Coast including two in 2007; and along the length of the Mississippi from the Twin Cities to New Orleans. They have recently enjoyed high-profile opening gigs for the likes of Emmylou Harris, Doc Watson, The Avett Brothers and the Del McCoury band. Summer of 2008 finds them traveling to Europe for the 21st Annual Country Rendez-Vous Festival in Crappone, France.

The Summer Breeze Concert Series is supported by grants from the Norman Arts Council and Oklahoma Arts Council, as well as the generous support of many local businesses, organizations and individuals.

Much of his work is oriented around composing relationships rather than specific sounds: setting up situations in which performers follow simple sets of rules to interact and produce an unpredictably complex whole. Jensen holds a teaching certificate through the Deep Listening Institute and has edited several books on Deep Listening. He obtained his BM in Composition from Oberlin Conservatory and MM and DMA in Composition from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. His composition teachers have included Ramiro Cortes, Joseph Wood, Randolph Coleman, Ben Johnston, Edwin London, Herbert Brun and Kenneth Gaburo. Dr. Magrill has written more than one hundred compositions for a variety of instruments from solo piano and chamber music to choir, wind ensemble and symphony orchesta. His works have been performed throughout the U.S., abroad and many regional and national conferences. He has received numerous awards and commissions, including ones from the National Endowment for the Arts, the American Music Center, the Mid-America Arts Alliance, the Illinois Arts Council, ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers), the Oklahoma Music Teacher’s Association, the American Composer’s Forum’s Continental Harmony Program and faculty research grants and merit credit awards from UCO. In Fall 1997, Dr. Magrill was chosen as the Hauptman Fellow for the UCO College of Liberal Arts. In Spring 2000, he was inducted into SAI as an Arts Associate and won the AAUP-UCO Distinguished Creativity Award.

Joseph Rivers is a concert and film composer and is Professor of Music and Film Studies at the University of Tulsa, where he teaches composition, film scoring and music theory. Nuova Avventura, a long-awaited CD of his compositions for piano, and with violin, clarinet, viola and cello, was released in 2010. He earned his degrees at the University of South Carolina (B.M. and M.M.), where he studied with Gordon Goodwin and Fred Teuber, and at the University of Arizona (Ph.D.), where he studied with Richard Faith and Edward Murphy.

Rick Fry announced his resignation as Executive Director at the June meeting of the Norman Arts Council Board of Directors. Fry joined the NAC in April 2008. He previously had worked in the private sector as a landscape painter.

Fry decided to join the Performing Arts Studio as Executive Director because of its focus as an events centered organizations rather than a programs and grant-giving organization.

“I wanted to have the ability to be more hands-on with events and arts in Norman,” said Fry.

Coming from a background as a full-time artist focusing on landscape painting, the NAC position kept Fry from taking time to visit places like the Wichita Mountains for inspiration.

“Being a part of the PAS gives me more time to focus on my own art.” said Fry.

Fry’s final day as Executive Director of the NAC was June 30th. He began at the PAS on July 1st.

The Norman Arts Council is currently accepting applications for the position of Executive Director. For more information, visit the Jobs page.
