Marcus Eakers is a multidisciplinary artist based in Oklahoma, whose work transforms lived experience into bold, symbolic narratives. Through exaggerated forms and character-driven compositions, he explores identity, vulnerability, and cultural perspective with striking emotional clarity.
A quiet and introspective presence, Marcus creates work that speaks powerfully—layered, expressive, and deeply human. His illustrations and murals have been featured in publications including Curbside Chronicle, 405 Business, and Eater, as well as in public spaces across Oklahoma.
At the heart of his practice is his role as a father. His young daughter is his greatest source of inspiration and purpose, shaping both his worldview and creative voice. This influence resonates throughout his work, adding depth, tenderness, and intention.
With over 25 years of experience, Marcus continues to create pieces that invite viewers not only to observe—but to feel.

One of the great impacts of collaborative art is its ability to pull in people that may not traditionally see themselves as creative. Art and creating, which can be inaccessible, is suddenly within reach with collaborative and community-based art, and in a lot of circumstances, speaking a language that is more diverse and interesting than solo work. In my pieces, Self-Portrait and Portrait of My Favorite Smile, I worked collaboratively with my husband, creating digital drawings together. My husband showed me his favorite shapes to doodle and covered the background while I drew the portraits. These two pieces are experimental, tests almost, for a series of collaborative portraits, where individuals guide me through how they want to be represented, and participate in the art made from them.
This body of work is a visual record for the research into my family’s cultural heritage and genealogy. My works are most influenced by the Fulani (Fulɓe, Peul, Hilani, Fula, Pël, Fulaw), and Yoruba (Ìran Yorùbá) tribes because these are the groups my family are most likely to have connections to. My choice in media contributes to the body of work by highlighting my status as an outsider to these communities. I pair this research and knowledge with my own admiration for the complex cultures and customs I have no connection to, my relationship to Africa as an American, and with speculation into what my family and enslaved ancestors could have been had they never encountered the zeitgeist of European and American colonialism.

“Art is simply the manifestation of thought the mind cannot speak that shows complexities of self.”
This belief guides my work as a mixed media artist. I use acrylic paint along with materials like dried flowers, fabric, and found objects to create layered pieces that flow between two-dimensional and three-dimensional space. My work combines abstraction and surrealism to reflect personal experience and cultural influences.
I often focus on one body part at a time. This allows me to explore its significance beyond anatomy—revealing its emotional, symbolic, and structural importance. Each part becomes a way to express memory, vulnerability, and identity through form and material. The textures and natural elements I use are not just for visual effect—they represent transformation, time, and the layers of experience we carry. Through this process, my work becomes a physical record of thought and feeling that cannot always be spoken.

Denae Elise (b. 2000, Oklahoma City, OK) is a visual artist whose acrylic mixed media practice blends abstraction and surrealism to examine personal identity and cultural memory. Her work incorporates textural materials such as dried flowers, fabric, and plaster, creating layered surfaces that flow between two- and three-dimensional space. These materials function as symbolic extensions of transformation, impermanence, and emotional depth.
Drawing from her education in healthcare, Elise approaches her work with a detailed understanding of anatomy. She often focuses on a single body part in each piece, highlighting its significance beyond the physical form. This focus creates a dialogue between clinical insight and creative expression, exploring themes of vulnerability and complexity.Raised in Oklahoma City, her art reflects her lived experience and ongoing material investigations. Guided by her belief that “art is simply the manifestation of thought the mind cannot speak that shows complexities of self,” her practice invites viewers to engage with the intimate layers of meaning embedded in her compositions.

Reflexion
Chase Spivey
Friday April 10, through Friday May 8
Opening Reception: Friday, April 10 6-9 PM
-
Reflexion is a large-scale interactive installation of over 2,500 slightly convex 2.5 inch circular mirrors mounted across the walls of the Library Gallery at MAINSITE Contemporary Art. Each mirror can pivot slightly, allowing the viewer's reflection and the surrounding environment to shift in response to interaction. The work challenges traditional gallery viewing by making the viewer's presence an essential and evolving part of the piece. Drawing from geometric abstraction, kinetic art, and participatory installation traditions, Reflexion turns the gallery into a perceptual instrument exploring themes of perception, identity, surveillance, and transformation.
