Inherited Forms explores the ways in which ornament, architecture, and craft become vessels for cultural memory. Drawing from the geometric rhythms of Islamic architecture and the rich textile traditions of Pakistan, my work examines how patterns passed through generations carry narratives of identity, belonging, and resilience. These inherited forms become a visual language; one that transcends words and quietly preserves histories that might otherwise disappear.
Working with embroidered thread on carved wood, I merge textile traditions with architectural form, transforming ornament into sculptural relief. The interplay of hand embroidery, carved surfaces, and layered construction creates shifting relationships between light, shadow, and color, allowing each work to evolve as the viewer moves around it. Like the intricate facades and screens that inspire them, the sculptures are activated by light, revealing depth, texture, and moments of quiet discovery. This dialogue between softness and structure challenges conventional boundaries between craft, design, and sculpture.
As industrialization and globalization continue to displace many handmade traditions, these works become acts of preservation rather than replication. They do not seek to recreate the past, but to carry its knowledge forward, allowing inherited techniques and visual languages to evolve within a contemporary context. Ornament becomes more than embellishment; it becomes a record of migration, adaptation, and continuity.

Born in the UK and raised in Texas since her teens, Nosheen Iqbal is a multidisciplinary artist whose sculptural wood and fiber works explore identity, cultural heritage, and the preservation of traditionalcraft. She received her BFA in Communication Design from the University of North Texas before spending over a decade at Fossil, where she advanced through roles in design, art direction, and ultimately lead watch designer, contributing to brands including DKNY, Armani Exchange, Opening Ceremony, and Michaels. Alongside her design career, she cultivated a distinctive studio practice centered on hand-embroidered wood sculptures inspired by Pakistani textiles and Islamic architecture. Her work has been exhibited at Galleri Urbane, the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, Paris Art Week, and Miami Art Week, and has been featured inElle Decoration France,Embroidery Magazine UK,Texas Monthly,Colossal,Fiber Art Now, andSurface Design Magazine.
