Growing Public Art Collection

Norman is home to an ever expanding collection of public art, including standalone sculptures — most prominently with newly built and upgraded facilities made possibly by the Norman Forward 1% for Art program — as well as storm drain murals, ducks and bike racks dotted across town, with an eye on more murals in the years ahead.

Mural Incentive Program

The Norman Arts Council and the Norman Public Art Committee’s Mural Incentive Program is intended to enhance Norman, OK's cultural landscape by providing matching funds to property owners who wish to invest in a mural on the exterior of their property.

Murals must be within the City of Norman, Oklahoma's boundaries.

NAC/PAC will consider 1:1 matching up to $10,000. If the NAC/PAC approves the request, it will be the maximum possible award. If the application is from a nonprofit entity, no matching funds are required unless the project exceeds $10,000. All applicants can expect a response within 45 days of submission.

Artful Inlets

The City of Norman maintains a stormwater system that channels runoff from streets and buildings directly into local creeks and streams, without treatment. This runoff often carries pollutants like trash, oil, fertilizers, and pet waste.

To raise awareness, the Public Arts Committee and the Norman Arts Council have Artful Inlets. Artists are invited to design storm drain art that transforms drains into a public education tool.

There are currently Artful Inlets in the Walker Arts District, Lion’s Park, Colonial Estates Park, Vineyard Park, Sequoya Trail Park, and Chisholm’s Cattle Trail Park.

Sound Trekking

SOUND TREKKING: NORMAN builds on the 2021 installation IN THEIR WORDS by artist Alexander, transforming public spaces with engraved paths and steel sculptures that reflect a century of Norman voices. Designed to inspire civic pride and spark imagination, the project invites the community to see familiar places in new ways and become active participants in the evolving experience of public art.
